An ode to the egg shape to give new life to water

The new OVOPUR filter was designed by Manuel Desrochers. He has been interested in water for about 10 years, and when he found that there was no existing quality product on the market, he set out to address this major shortcoming. This led him to develop an eco-friendly filter that would preserve and revitalize tap water, as well as being functionally and aesthetically attractive. OVOPUR blends ancient traditions and future trends.

According to the creator of the OVOPUR filter, “The unique shape of our water filtration unit did not result from sheer serendipity. Inspired by the work of water research pioneers, its shape eases the circulation and regeneration of water. Its overall look is one of abundance, purity, and its appealing curves and use of fine materials like porcelain, glass, and metal bear witness to our commitment to aesthetics and quality.”

The OVOPUR unit combines the shape of an egg and the thermal properties of porcelain to preserve and revitalize water. Its sleek curves and total absence of right angles allow water to flow freely and naturally. Temperature differences and normal flow induce a biotic movement that prevents stagnation, reduces the risk of bacteria buildup, and helps to revitalize the water.

Visible concrete is part of the expressive language of modern architecture and, with Aplomb, Foscarini introduces a model that uses this material with a spirit and technology that is entirely original. The challenge was to create an incredible leap of scale: from large architectural constructions to a little suspension lamp with a thickness of just a few millimeters at its finest point, using a material that is so inflexible. The challenge has been met with impeccable ‘aplomb’, thanks to the use of special concrete that is particularly fluid in molding and has a material effect that is both rough and, at the same time, elegant.

Aplomb creates direct, precise lighting on occasional tables, peninsulas and counters, alone or in a multiple composition, with its presence as a small, yet important protagonist, also underlined by the different colors available: the natural grey of concrete, brown or white, created by combining pigments together with its exclusive mixture.

Background
On 17 April 1958, the World Exhibition opened in Brussels with the “Atomium”, an enormous 102 m high structure, as its central feature. The 9 metal spheres, each with a diameter of 18 m, were linked by means of connecting tunnels 23 m in length. The “Atomium” represents a metal crystal 165 billion times its normal size. Once inside this gigantic model, visitors can use the connecting tunnels to move from one sphere to another.

Around the end of the fifties and the beginning of the ‘sixties, the Sputnik and the Atomium proved to be a source of inspiration for dozens of light fitting designs from unknown developers. All models designed at that time (which were given the name “Sputnik”) were variations on the same theme.

The designers of Jolina Products have drawn extensively on the many Sputnik models from the ‘sixties and each produced an individual interpretation. The results are: the Sputnik 20, the Sputnik 06, the Sputnik 10 and the Spider C 12. The Sputnik 12 was designed by Paul de Haan.

A sensation of ice and light, of heat and chill. Harri Koskinen plays with contrasts and the archetypes of modern society in his Block Lamp, which became a design classic as soon as it was launched in 1996. The Block Lamp has been showered with design awards ever since, including: Excellent Swedish Design in 1998, the Design Plus Award at the Ambiente Trade Fair in Frankfurt, as well as Best New Product at the accent show in New York in 1999. The lamp became part of MoMA’s permanent collection in 2000. Last year Harri received the Torsten and Wanja Söderberg Prize, Scandinavia’s most prominent design award. The chairman of the jury notes that Harri is an internationally renowned designer who, despite his young age, is perhaps Finland’s greatest contemporary designer, and whose design is a perfect combination of tradition and renewal.

Discocó is by far the ultimate decorative suspension lamp. Attractive and exuberant, it generates effects and creates subtle light, achieving an elegant and mysterious atmosphere.

It is available in two versions with different diameters: Ø88cm and Ø53cm and consists of 35 opaque discs coated with bright white lacquer, creating direct and reflected light.

The association of ideas is what makes the human brain work; as a result, I like to resort to the collective consciousness when designing. The lamps of Poul Henningsen, the ‘Fun DM’ collection by Verner Panton and the ‘Porca Miseria’ light from Ingo Maurer were touchstones for the design.

The early sketches for the Discocó date from 1997, but, at that time, I was not clear as to how to bring the idea to fruition. In the intervening period, I had gone back to them a few times, before finally coming up with the most suitable technology and manufacturing process.

We created the notion of a light source surrounded by reflecting diffusing components and the idea of the screening of the light itself by using opaque discs of moulded ABS and injection moulded aluminum rods. As a result, the finish is flawless and the assembly screw free. – Christophe Mathieu
